Missed Opportunity

er> Linus Pauling's 1960 book The Nature of the Chemical Bond 3rd ed., Cornell University Press, contained a diagram of a clathrate with the same topology as the Weaire-Phelan structure. This book was sitting on my father's bookshelf 10 feet from me as I was trying to beat Kelvin's foam back around 1991, and if I had happened to open the book to page 471, I like to think I would have won the race to beat Kelvin.
